These past few snow days have me wanting to do nothing else but cozy up at home! But having a cozy home is something that’s to be enjoyed year around!
Here are 5 simple tips to give your home that cozy and inviting feeling day after day!
For me, the most important element to making a room feel cozy is lighting.
My house has lamps everywhere. I just love lamps! They give off a soft ambient light that instantly gives the room that cozy feeling. As soon as the sun sets (and on rainy days too), I like to go room by room turning on all the lamps.
I especially love turning on the lamps in the bedrooms. It sets the tone for a nice, calm night. I do this also when we have guests over. Rather than keep the bedroom doors shut, I like to leave them open with the lamps on. That way it gives your guests a mini tour of your home as they skim through your hallways.
Recently, we went on a house tour and I even saw lamps in bathrooms! I thought, “oh that’s so cute and unexpected!” Even the bathroom felt cozy, ha!
Entryway tables are also a great spot to place lamps as it sets the mood immediately upon entering the home.

Strategically placed lighting is key when it comes to setting the right mood. Think of when you go to wedding, or a fancy restaurant. The vibe you’re getting is mainly from the lighting. Or like when you drive by a house at night and you see the house light up from the outside. It’s a beautiful thing. If the lighting is right, your home will certainly feel like the perfect place to unwind!
When it comes to warming up a home, you always want to incorporate “texture”. Throw pillows are so important in a cozy space. Not only are they a great tool for decorating and redecorating, they also add interest, depth and warmth to the room.
Think soft materials like fur, yarn, cotton…or pillows with tassels. Materials that give you the natural instinct to want to touch them or make you want to curl up on the sofa and relax.
Blankets are also great for adding coziness. You can never have too many blankets around, especially during winter!
Throw a blanket over the corner of the sofa or at the foot of your bed.
And if you’re anything like me, you’ve got plenty of blankets and throw pillows to spare! Don’t hide them away in the closet. Bring them out and display them in a cute basket! It adds even more texture to the space making it feel that much cozier.
Another sure fire way of adding warmth and coziness to a room is by adding rugs.
Cold, bare floors are not very inviting. Instead, lay a rug under your sofa, or under your dining table, or even in your entryway. You can also layer your rugs for extra dimension, giving the room several different textures!
Whenever I design a room for a client, one of the first things I shop for is window treatments. I’ve worked on so many rooms where the windows have been bare. Many times the clients request to keep them bare. I kindly suggest otherwise and in the end, they are surprised with what a difference the curtains made! Not only do they serve as privacy and keeping the hot sun out, they add warmth and coziness to the room.
And I love the look of bamboo shades with drapes over them. It adds an extra layer of dimension!
Lastly, I love having flowers in the home. It gives it a fresh, lived in feeling and it aesthetically pleasing to the eyes.
You can use fresh or faux flowers or plants to give any room life! Having real life plants or flowers in the home shows that the person who lives there is nurturing and attending to that plant and that in and of itself gives off an inviting feeling.
Whenever I have an empty spot in the house and I can’t think of what to put there, I automatically turn to greenery or flowers. The problem is instantly fixed and the entire room has changed!
I like to have flowers on the kitchen island or in bathrooms, entryways and especially the bedroom!
